The Peace Architecture Dialogue,PAD, under the auspices of Search for Common Ground have expressed concerns over the increasing rate of criminal activities in the state, calling on Government at all levels to consider decisive measures in tackling them.
This was contained in a Press release signed by the PAD Chairman, Taraba State, Professor Joseph Lucas and made available to Worldview in Jalingo recently.
The statement stressed that the increased cases of kidnapping banditry, rape, armed robbery and other vices has left communities vulnerable and devasted.
The PAD stressed the need for collaboration between all agencies, heads, affected communities and government institutions concerned in order to curb the mayhem that has been consuming communities like a wild fire.
“Recent incidents of Kidnapping, banditry, rape, armed robbery etc, have underscored the urgent need for comprehensive and effective measures to ensure the security of our citizens. The rise in crime rates, including the aforementioned incidents has left communities across the state feeling vulnerable and demanding a swift response from the government”
They outlined keys areas and things that should be worked on in order achieve positive results in the fight against insecurity.
“Provide ongoing training for law enforcement personnel to ensure they are equipped with the latest skills and knowledge needed to address evolving security challenges effectively.
“Launch public awareness campaigns to educate citizens about safety measures and encourage them to report suspicious activities. Building a culture of vigilance and cooperation is crucial in combating insecurity.
“Collaborate with neighboring states and international organizations to share intelligence and best practices in addressing cross-border criminal activities.
“Streamline and strengthen the judicial system to ensure justice is served without interference. This includes addressing case backlogs, improving witness protection programs, and implementing stricter penalties for serious offenses and offenders
“Foster collaboration between law enforcement agencies and local communities to establish trust and open lines of communication. Community policing initiatives through the use of Vigilante and professional hunters to help build a stronger bond between law enforcement and residents” the statement reads.
The group called on SEMA, NEMA to as a matter of urgency, make relief materials available to affected communities in order to cushion the effect of the unfortunate incidences and also pledged their support whenever and however it is needed by Government in the fight against insecurity.
