Taraba former governor cautions youth against nationwide planned protest

By Jethro Yerga, Jalingo

The former governor of Taraba State, Rev Jolly Nyame, has cautioned youths of Yorro and Yangdang Communities in Particular and entire areas of Taraba State to stay away from the nation wide planned protest billed to commence on the 1st August, 2024

Rev Nyame gave this caution while addressing a cross section of Mumuye and Yangdang youths during a press conference he organized in Jalingo, the Taraba State Capital

He emphasised that the planned Protest was not for the good of Nigeria and urged the people not to join, reminding them of the constitutional means of removing a bad Government through the ballot box

The former governor noted that the country was no doubt, going through one of the toughest challenges in history, but engaging in such act would only worsen the situation and endanger the lives of thousands of people.

“We are all aware of the plan by some Nigerians to vent their anger on the government by agreeing to a National Protest or shutdown. I must admit that in view of certain policies and long standing national issues, the government should take the blame for some of the problems affecting our nation.

“However, we as Nigerians must examine our actions in the face of this unfortunate situation, to see whether or not we have contributed positively or otherwise in our various walks of life, to this situation.

“For this reason, I must warn you against joining the so-called National citizens protest being planned against the Government under the guise of advocating for good Governance. Where as every Nigerian has the right to complain or protest against bad governance, the language employed by the planners is threatening, divisive and clearly aims at removing a democratically elected Government.

“This action can only worsen the situation and endanger the lives of thousands of people. There is already a Constitutional means of removing a bad Government through the ballot box and not brigandage and terrorism”. He stressed

Rev Jolly further advocated for setting up of a political committee in the community with the mandate of re-planning and re- organization of political interest of the Mumuye community in both Taraba and Adamawa States, noting that as one of the largest communities in the two states, no government should be set up in both states without their visible participation and representation to ensure that proper harmony and unity is achieved in the respective quest for political offices.

The Daban Yorro stated that as a peaceful and hard working Nation, with the people engaged in various noble means of livelihood, like farming, the governments should subside education, health and Agriculture as these would go a long way in addressing the hardships faced by the masses.

In their seperate reactions at the event, the National Youth President, Mumuye Cultural Development Association Youth Wing, (MCDAYW), Mr Ezekiel H. Augustine and the President, Yangdang Youth Development Congress (YYDC), Mr Yerima Akila Yeri, all maintained that they hold the former governor with high esteem and so would not go against him to join the protest

The duo lamented the unprecedented nature of challenges the country is passing through but pledged to reach out to the youths in their respective communities to surely find better ways to communicate their grievances to the government
