KSADP boosts farming, trade with road network
From Fanen Ihyongo, Kano
The Kano State Agro Pastoral Development Project (KSADP) is providing 70km road-network in 10 locations for farmers to access markets with their farm produce.
The development has spurred agricultural activities and trade in the benefiting communities.
The roads are at various levels of completion.
The Zerewa to Fulatan Road in Rogo local government is 90 percent finished and will be completed in the first week of January, while the rest will be completed on March 31 next year.
In Gwangwan a 7.5km road has been provided with drainages and the work is ongoing. Nearby is another 7.5km road from Mil Goma to Yankasari, and there is another 3km road from Wasai to Baitai.
The Kano State Agro Pastoral Development Project is providing the roads in collaboration with the Islamic Development Bank, Lives Livelihood Fund (LLF) and other partners.
The KSADP Infrastructure Engineer, Engr. Zaharaddeen Hamisu, said N11 billion has been spent on the 10 roads under construction.
He disclosed that the Islamic Development Bank is funding the project with 90$ million, Lives Livelihood Fund (LLF) is contributing 6.5$ million as grant, while the Kano state government is contributing 5$ million as counterpart fund.
Engr. Hamisu said: “When we first came here, the road was so narrow and bad that even a motorcycle could find it difficult transporting anything out of this place.
“Because of the presence of the Wasai Dam, farming is all year round. But when farmers harvest their produce, whether in the rainy or dry season, they are not able to convey the commodities from here to the markets because of lack of access roads.
“That is why this 3.5km road is constructed in a strategic location for farmers and their clients to be able do their business activities especially in the area of conveying harvested produce to the markets for sale.”
