Three Kano LG Councils Get Tap Water 10 Years After.
By Worldview Magazine.
Kano State Government has restored pipe-borne water supply in three local government areas, as part of its efforts to end perennial water shortage in the state.
The development is coming after 10 years of lack of treated tap water supply, the locals said.
The benefiting communities include Kunya, Wailare and Kilawa in Minjibir, Makoda and Dambatta Local Government Areas of the state.
Commissioner for Water Resources, Umar Haruna Doguwa, alongside newsmen, inspected the taps in the benefiting communities on Sunday.
The running tap water was odourless but with colour. The commissioner explained that the water had been treated, so with time, it will become colourless.
During the tour, Doguwa expressed his ministry’s determination to restore water supply to Dambatta, headquarters of Dambatta Local Government, which he said has also been without water for over a decade.
He said “my joy today (Saturday) came when I saw women and children rushing to the taps with buckets and jerrycans, fetching the water with jubilation, pouring on their heads and body, washing their faces and drinking it. I was imagining what that meant to them.”
“I can’t imagine a town like Dambatta will be without water for about ten years. This is unacceptable. We are determined to restore water supply to that town soon.
“The ministry of Water Resources has procured all the necessary equipment and is working assiduously to clear the obstacles hampering the restoration of water to Kano towns.
“These obstacles or challenges include the rusting of pipes and the vandalism of the valve on the pipeline at Thomas Dam,” he said.
The commissioner however, assured that the ministry was repairing pipes that had been broken over time so as to ensure smooth flow of water to the benefiting communities.
“All these obstacles are surmountable and I can assure you that with the commitment of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, we are going to surmount them.
“The governor is totally committed to the transformation of the state water sector towards the provision of portable water to all parts of the state,” he assured.
