The Nigerian Army has reaffirmed its commitment to professionalism and human rights through a sensitization workshop held for troops of 6 Brigade Nigerian Army and Sector 3, Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS), in Jalingo, Taraba State.

According to the Acting Assistant Director Public Relations, Capt Olubodunde Oni, the workshop, which took place on July 23, 2025, was organized by the Department of Civil-Military Affairs (DCMA), under the directive of the Army Headquarters.

Declaring the event open, the Chief of Civil-Military Affairs, Major General GU Chibuisi, emphasized the importance of the training in shaping the conduct of troops, especially in light of evolving security challenges.

He maintained that respect for legal frameworks and human dignity must guide the Army’s engagements with civilians.

“These operations place enormous responsibilities on the Nigerian Army and its personnel. It is therefore imperative that we continue to guide our troops on the laws that govern their conduct. Respect for human rights must remain a cornerstone of our operations.” He said.

According to him, the workshop also aims to build soldiers who are not only effective in the field but are also responsible citizens within the larger society.

In his opening remarks earlier, the Commander of 6 Brigade/Sector 3 OPWS, Brigadier General Kingsley Chidiebere Uwa, said the training underscores the Brigade’s unwavering dedication to professionalism and the protection of human rights.

He made reference to the Brigade’s role during the nationwide protests, noting that troops under his command conducted themselves with restraint and discipline, a decision he said led to zero casualties.

“This program serves not only as a refresher but also as a solemn reminder of our oath to protect lives and property. I commend the DCMA for bringing this initiative to 6 Brigade and encourage our troops to take the lessons seriously.” Uwa said.

General Uwa also appreciated the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Olufemi Olatunbosun Oluyede, for his continued investment in the welfare, training, and development of personnel across the country.

The workshop featured lectures on topics including Human Rights and Professional Conduct of Personnel, Psychoactive Substance Abuse, Mental Health, and Family Cohesion. Participants also engaged in interactive sessions and received souvenirs at the close of the event.
