NIMET WARNS OF FLASH FLOODS AND HEAVY RAINFALL IN TARABA STATE
From Mohammed Tikka
The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a serious weather alert, warning residents of Taraba State to prepare for days of heavy rain, strong winds, and possible flash floods.
According to NiMet’s forecast, Taraba is among 20 states across Nigeria expected to experience intense rainfall and thunderstorms from now through the next three days. The agency has urged residents to take immediate precautions, especially those living in low-lying and riverine areas.
NiMet noted that the weather pattern for the coming days shows a mix of early morning thunderstorms, afternoon showers, and evening downpours. These will be accompanied by gusty winds, which can cause damage to rooftops, trees, electric poles, and poorly constructed buildings.
The rainfall will come with strong winds and is expected to occur from morning to evening, possibly leading to overflowing rivers, blocked drainages, and flooding in low-lying communities. Residents are advised to remain indoors during heavy rain, avoid walking or driving through flooded roads, and secure rooftops and loose items that may be carried away by strong winds.
Experts also warned that flash floods can occur suddenly, making roads impassable and endangering lives.
In the state local farmers and families in flood-prone areas are already expressing concern, recalling the destruction caused by similar rains in past years.
NiMet is stressing that people should not ignore the warning, as flash floods can happen suddenly and pose serious risks to life and property. The coming days are expected to be critical, and the public is advised to take safety measures seriously to avoid loss of lives and property.
