The World Health Organisation (WHO) has announced the appointment of Dr. Pavel Ursu as its new Representative to Nigeria, following the formal presentation of his credentials to the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja.
The announcement was contained in a statement issued by the UN health agency on Tuesday.
Dr. Ursu succeeds Dr. Walter Kazadi Mulombo, who now serves as Director, Office of the Regional Director, WHO African Region, and Acting WHO Representative to Guinea-Bissau. Mulombo, who led WHO’s Nigeria Country Office for five years, was commended for his leadership and contributions to strengthening Nigeria’s public health systems and advancing key health interventions.
Before the new appointment, Dr. Alex Gasasira served as WHO Representative ad interim to Nigeria, ensuring the continued implementation of programmes and collaboration with national health authorities.
In his remarks during the credential presentation, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, welcomed Dr. Ursu to Nigeria and assured him of the government’s readiness to deepen its collaboration with WHO in improving the nation’s health outcomes.
The WHO said Dr. Ursu’s appointment underscores its commitment to supporting Nigeria’s efforts in achieving universal health coverage and tackling emerging health challenges across the country.
