Taraba at 34: A legacy of peace, progress
and sports revival under Gov Kefas

As Taraba State marks its 34th anniversary, it reflects on significant achievements under the leadership of Governor Dr. Agbu Kefas. Barrister Jime Yongo, Chairman of the Taraba State Sports Council, highlighted the state’s remarkable progress in peace restoration and sports revitalization, both of which have paved the way for future growth.

Governor Kefas’ foremost achievement, according to Barrister Yongo, is the restoration of peace and security across the state.
“Before his tenure, Taraba faced considerable insecurity, even in its capital, Jalingo. However, with the establishment of peace committees and a balanced approach of forceful and peaceful measures, the state is now significantly safer. This new found stability has paved way for development across various sectors, including education and agriculture.

“In the realm of sports, Taraba has seen a revival under the current administration. Once in decline, the state is now actively participating in national events, with athletes competing in the National Sports Festival in Ogun State and representing the state at the ongoing National Youth Games in Asaba. Governor Kefas has emphasized the importance of youth development, ensuring that the state is building a solid foundation for future sporting successes.

“Taraba’s contingent at the National Youth Games has been performing well, with the athletes showcasing their talents. Yongo expressed optimism that many of these young athletes will go on to represent Taraba in future national competitions, offering hope for the state’s continued success in sports. “ He said.
Elaborating on the Governor Kefas’ commitment to sport development in the state, the chairman revealved that a significant legislative development has also taken place under Governor Kefas’ leadership. Stating that an executive bill is already transmitted to the Taraba State House of Assembly, which has now been passed into law, establishing the Taraba State Sports Commission. The Commission, according to him, will directly oversee sports development, eliminating bureaucratic barriers and streamlining the management of sporting activities in the state.

Looking ahead, Yongo commended Taraba’s growth since its creation, acknowledging the contributions of previous governors such as Jolly Nyame, Danbaba Suntai, and Darius Ishaku, who laid the groundwork through infrastructural developments.

On the Governor Kefas footprints on the 34 years of the statehood, Barrister Jime Yongo said Governor Kefas, is focused on building upon these successes. Notable projects under his leadership include the transformation of the Government House into the TY Danjuma House and the renovation of the Danbaba Suntai Airport, among others.

He emphasized that Gov. Kefas’ administration is committed to completing ongoing projects and ensuring sustainable growth for the state.
