Taraba ASUSS Celebrates 2024 World Teachers Day, Advocates for Increased Support.

The Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools (ASUSS), Taraba State chapter, have advocated for increased support for educators even as they joined the rest of the world to celebrate the 2024 World Teachers Day themed, “Valuing Teachers Voices towards a new social contract for education”

During the Celebration that took place in Jalingo, Chairman of the occasion, Honorable Johannes Jigem pointed that,World Teachers day is an annual event set aside by the United Nations to celebrate teachers all over the World in recognition to their pivotal roles in shaping the future of children into better citizens.

He noted that valuing teachers voices can never be overemphasized owing to the fact that, teaching is the only profession that creates all other professions in the world and that, teachers are the pinnacles/pillars of every responsible society as well as the second parents to children.

Hon. Jigem however reiterated the commitment of ASUSS in supporting the government adding that, the Union has already keyed into the free education policy of His Excellency, Dr Agbu Kefas to better education in Taraba State.

He finally enjoined ASUSS to cooperate with Gov. Kefas to move the state’s education system forward, urging members to remain resolute and work as a team to navigate through the challenges of the profession.

Similarly, the Permanent Secretary, Taraba State Ministry of Education ,Mr. Idris A.Goje, congratulated/commended the teachers for their unwavering impacts, dedication, service and commitment in building and shaping the future of children and society.

He further reiterated the zeal and passion of Gov. Agbu Kefas in providing quality education in the state for the common good of all citizenry while calling on teachers, stakeholders and Tarabans to support the five finger agenda of Gov. Kefas for more dividends of democracy.

On his part, the ASUSS chairman, Taraba State Chapter, Comrade Sule M. Abas, lauded teachers for standing tall to keep sustaining education and society despite the emerging challenges.

He equally commended Gov. Agbu Kefas for his deliberate policies and programmes towards lifting the standard of education in the state as well as improving the welfare of teachers. He further pledged to collaborate with other sister unions to support the government’s efforts.

Guest speaker of the occasion, Associate Professor R. H Kitause who spoke on the the theme, ‘Valuing Teachers Voices Towards a New Social Contract for Education’, stated that the day is aimed at celebrating the strengths,struggles and services of teachers across the globe.

He explained that teachers voices represents their collective opinion about their welfare, adding that teachers voices are weapons for advocacy.

“The survival of Nigeria and the world depend on teacher. The uniqueness of teachers all over the world is their voices so, the valuing teachers voices should not be a matter of choice but a deliberate action.

“What teachers need to do all over the world is to unite their voices and speak as one undivided body to advance their course better” he stated.
