The Chairman of the Taraba State Gwari Fruits and Vegetables Sellers Association, Alhaji Alhassan Muhammad, has praised Governor Agbu Kefas for his strong efforts in improving security and education across the state. He made this known during an interview with journalists in Jalingo.
Alhaji Alhassan said the governor’s commitment to tackling insecurity is commendable, noting that peace and safety are the foundation for any meaningful development. According to him, without a secure environment, no business or government program can succeed.
He also lauded the governor’s strides in the education sector, especially the recent introduction of free education for primary and secondary school students. He said the government’s decision to cut tuition fees for tertiary institutions in half is a bold and welcome move.
“These efforts show that the governor has the interest of the people at heart,” the chairman said. “We as an association are fully in support of his leadership and we are ready to stand behind him in all his development initiatives.”
In light of ongoing political discussions and speculation surrounding the governor’s future, Alhaji Alhassan addressed the growing signs and agitation by some groups and youths for Governor Kefas to defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
On that, Alhaji Alhassan stressed that for the Gwari traders, what matters most is development, not party lines.
“For us, we are with the governor everywhere he goes, party or no party. As far as the move will bring the desired development to Taraba State, we will always stand by his side,” he said.
While expressing his support, Alhaji Alhassan also used the opportunity to highlight some of the challenges facing their association. He said despite being one of the largest employers of labour in the state, they have received little or no support from the government.
He revealed that between 15,000 to 20,000 people across Taraba State earn their daily income through the sale of fruits and vegetables, yet the sector remains largely overlooked in government programs and interventions.
The chairman called on the government to recognize their role in boosting the local economy and to include them in empowerment and support programs. He said such recognition would not only boost their morale but also give them a sense of belonging in the larger society.
“Our business affects everyone, whether rich or poor, young or old, healthy or sick. Everyone needs fruits and vegetables. We deserve to be supported like any other key sector,” he stated.
Alhaji Alhassan urged members of the association to remain law-abiding citizens and continue to support the current government. He emphasized the importance of peace and cooperation in building a better Taraba State for all.
He also thanked members of the association for the trust and support they gave him during his election as chairman. He called on the people of Taraba to see the Gwari Fruits and Vegetables Sellers Association as partners in progress and treat them with the respect and dignity they deserve.
The association pledged continued support for the government while appealing for recognition and assistance in return.
