Gunmen Kill corps member in Adamawa
From Emmanuel Samuel, Yola
Tension and fear filled the air in Adamawa on 27 August 2022 following the brutal murder of a National Youth Service Corps member.
It was reported that 28-year-old Samaila Awudu, an indigene of Taraba State, was killed when some five armed men stormed the NYSC lodge at Yolede Partte, Yola South Local Government Area at about 1:30 a.m. The attackers allegedly wielded dangerous weapons when they forced their way into the Corper’s Lodge.
It is not known why the suspected bandits targeted the NYSC Lodge and the youthful Samaila, who had only two months to complete his youth service in Adamawa State.
It was gathered that Samaila sustained various degrees of injury and died in cold blood shortly after being rushed to Federal Medical Centre Yola by the Adamawa State Police Commissioner for treatment.
Contacted for his comment on the incident, the NYSC Director in Adamawa, Mr. Jingi Denis, said investigations were ongoing to uncover the faces behind the dastardly act.
Jingi described Samaila Awudu’s death as “a loss not only to Taraba State but the whole nation. Samaila’s death is very sad.”
He expressed optimism that the government was on top of the issue because the Brigadier General came around and discussed the incident with the Governor.
“Hopefully, the governor will now do something about the corpers’ accommodation in Adamawa State,” the Director said, while calling on Samaila’s parents to take heart and accept everything. as the will of God. He added that death could come to anybody at anytime.
Speaking to our Correspondent the Police Public Relations Officer, S.P. Suleiman Nguroje, said the Command was aware of the situation and that investigations had already begun.
“The Adamawa State Police Command under the able leadership of C. P.Sikiru Akande is already investigating the incident to find out those behind this gruesome killing.
“This is happening at a time the Police Command is saddled with the responsibility of cracking down on criminality in the State.
“Where somebody’s life is taken, the Police will not relent in its efforts to fish out the perpetrators of the crime and bring them to book.”
S.P. Suleiman Ngoruje described his death as an eye opener, while assuring the public that the Command and NYSC Officials had already begun discussing ways of securing the lives of NYSC members in Adamawa State.
He said Samaila’s death was unfortunate and a huge concern to the Police Command in Adamawa, which was why the
Commissioner of Police drove down to the scene of the crime shortly after the incident and had to take the victim to the hospital himself.
“The one thing I can assure the public is that the police are doing everything possible to get to the roots of the matter. As soon as we are done, we will unmask those behind the crime,” he stated.
It could be noted that it is the first time such an attack on NYSC installations is taking place in Adamawa State. That is why the Police Command is leaving no stone unturned to ensure the safety of Corper’s in the State. We will not allow such a criminal act to happen in our Command again,” he vowed, while calling on the Corpers to go about their normal duties.
One of the Corpers, who spoke to our correspondent on condition of anonymity, said the killers first locked up all the doors of the other Corp members before going to Samaila’s room where they butchered him with an axe. Thinking he had already died, they abandoned him in his own pool of blood and fled.
thought he was already dead. “I think they were hired assassins. Right now, we are all living in fear,” he said. He and another very close friend of Samaila Awudu described the latter’s death as a cruel and heartbreaking loss, not only to their band members but the entire NYSC nationwide.
“He was very close to me and I don’t know how to get over the shock. I wish him eternal rest,” said the close friend.
