A significant breakthrough in the fight against vandalism was recorded for Yola Electricity Distribution Company (YEDC) recently as a group of suspects were apprehended by vigilantes in the community at Sebore Guga along Jada road. The arrest comes as a result of the company’s ongoing efforts to combat the illegal tampering with power infrastructure that has been a persistent challenge for the distribution of electricity in the region.

The suspects in custody have been identified as Emmanuel Kefas, aged 45, Jonah Linus, aged 39, and Mustapha Aliyu, aged 38. However, one suspect, Biri Modibbo, is currently at large and is being pursued by authorities. YEDC has indicated that the suspects will be charged to court following the completion of a thorough investigation into their activities.

In recent times, YEDC substation vandals have attempted to cut cables at Target junction and Ghana crescent at Bekaji, all in Yola, the Adamawa state capital, where they were chased away before they could cart away major parts of the substation. Similar incidents were recorded in all regions where YEDC operates.

YEDC Head of Corporate Communications, Olugbenga Oladimeji Adebola, said “vandalism of electricity infrastructure not only poses a threat to the reliable supply of electricity but also endangers the lives of individuals involved in these illegal activities. YEDC has reiterated its commitment to taking decisive action against anyone involved in such criminal acts to ensure the safety and security of the power supply for the communities it serves”.

The successful arrest of these individuals serves as a testament to the collaborative efforts between YEDC, vigilant community members and law enforcement agencies in addressing the issue of vandalism within their operational areas. It also sends a clear message that those engaging in such activities will be held accountable for their actions.

Adebola encouraged the public to support YEDC and law enforcement agencies by reporting any suspicious activities related to electricity infrastructure to help prevent further acts of vandalism and ensure a safe, reliable and uninterrupted electricity supply to the region.
