NUJ, FRSC Forge Partnership to Promote Road Safety and Public Awareness

By Christiana Babayo

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Taraba State Council, has called for stronger collaboration with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Taraba Sector Command, to enhance security and improve media relations in the state.

The call was made during a courtesy visit to the FRSC Command in Jalingo, led by the NUJ Chairman, Comrade Matthew Eliud Jen, alongside Council Executives, Chapel Officials, and Publishers.

Jen stressed the importance of synergy between the media and security agencies, noting that such collaboration would promote mutual interests while contributing to public safety and enlightenment.

“We are on a collaborative mission and as watch dogs of the society, we cannot work without synergy with those who are out to ensure safety of our roads, and safety of lives.

“As members of the 4th estate of the realm, journalists are saddled with the responsibility of informating and educating members of the society on issues and trends around them, hence the importance of this collaboration” Jen said.

He commended the Sector Commander, for the Corps’ efforts in safeguarding lives on the highways, describing road safety as central to development and public welfare.

In her response, the Sector Commander welcomed the visit, describing it as timely and significant in strengthening ties with the media.

She reaffirmed that the FRSC’s core mandate is to ensure that road users travel safely and arrive at their destinations without incident.

“I am delighted to hear the purpose of this visit because it aligns with one of the main mandates of the Corp in this year 2025. When I came into office, I also toured some media houses in the state in the spirit of this collaboration you have mentioned. It is indeed important for us to collaborate because no man is an Island. Our job is very sensitive because it deals with saving lives so this synergy is key” She said.

Mrs Attah also proposed the creation of a Special Marshal Unit for journalists to foster closer collaboration and streamline engagement between both institutions.

She further advised motorists to exercise caution, particularly as the ember months and festive season approach.

Meanwhile, members of the NUJ delegation commended the FRSC for its efforts but raised concerns over the proliferation of illegal motor parks and cases of overloading within the metropolis.

They urged the Corps to intensify enforcement to address the issues especially in these ember months leading to the festive seasons.
