“Big dreams alone is not enough in the music industry”- Artist

By Precious Everton

A fast rising music star in Taraba state, Adams Amegwa, popularly known as Sapphires has said having big dreams alone would not guarantee success in Nigeria’s music industry.

He said new entrants into the industry must be dedicated, persistent and hardworking to break even.

According to him, “I want to encourage the youths who will like to join this industry to have it at the back of their mind that it’s not easy. But it is only persistence, consistency, hard-work and prayers that are the only things necessary to keep you going and relevant to win it all.”

Sapphires who is currently pushing his craft alone identified financial constraint as the major challenge new artists might have to contend with.

He said, “the greatest challenge in this industry is promotion and financial instability. From personal experience, its always hard to find the right PR team to promote your songs.

“Even when you eventually get, their service charge are always too much for upcoming artiste who are trying to showcase themselves to the world. We end up becoming our own hypemen.”

Speaking further on his source of inspiration, the music star informed that his immediate environment and the support from friends and family were his motivation.

“I got inspired by my surroundings and friends as well. I have loved music from childhood and i grew up listening to different genres of music.

“We can trace this to the nursery rhymes we sing in school and during sunday school in church which later encouraged me to write my first lyrics at the age of 10”, he said.

Sapphires whose dream is to hit big stages with his evolving career says he is determined to keep releasing thought provoking songs that would compete favourably with other acts.

According to him, “I released my first single ‘Street’ in 2016, and my first studio album titled ‘The Mayor of Taraba’ in 2020.

“Going forward, I am determined to hit bigger stages and pull more numbers on every platform my music is being featured.”

Sapphires who is currently serving the country as a Corps member in Jos, Plateau state, hails from Wukari in Taraba state and has bagged Bachelors of Art in English Literary Studies from Federal University, Wukari.
